Forensic Linguistics reveals Evidence of Excellence
The Forensic Linguistics Institute was established in 1995 to investigate texts of a legal nature, and to undertake research into the best ways of conducting forensic analysis and measurement.

The Institute offers consultancy world-wide, and since 2002 has offered a course in the subject, aimed at mid-career law and law enforcement professionals, and linguistics graduates. The course forms one module of the Postgraduate Forensic Science programme at Nebraska Wesleyan University, an accredited US University.

The course consists of a variety of forensic texts, written, audio and on video; discussion and analysis of language, and an assignment to test the knowledge acquired. All the examples featured are taken from real cases, including those of murderers Dr. Harold Shipman and Susan Smith.

Yesterday the Institute was awarded ODL QC accreditation, after assessment against the ODL QC Standards. Since these cover all the elements of a quality provision, learners looking for a course can choose an accredited provider with confidence.

In recommending the award, ODL QC Chief Executive said, “FLI offers an excellent example of how distance learning can be used to offer a highly specialised course world-wide.” Dr Morley added, “There is a clear commitment on the part of the provider to offer a quality service.”
