The Open Learning Centre International offers more than 1,000 courses, many of which lead to nationally-validated qualifications. Applicants may wish to improve on their English, maths, or language skills with a ‘back-to-basics’ course. Some want to study for GCSEs or A levels, or learn a vocational skill such as Plumbing. Others want to hone their skills on a business course or follow a managerial course to give them the competitive advantage. Open learning is one of the most flexible ways to study. There's no need to wait for classes to begin, and students work at their own pace and at times that suit them best. The only fixed dates are for exams, where these are required to gain the course qualification. The ‘classroom’ can be at home, on the train, at work or anywhere else that’s convenient. Course advisors are available to all students, to give administrative support and advice. Most of the team have studied by open learning too, which helps them guidance to students. Many courses also include support of a specialist tutor. Some tutors have an academic background, others have industrial or commercial experience, but all have a special interest in the advantages of open learning. Students can contact their tutors by phone, post, fax, and email. Some courses also have group seminars. Staff TrainingAs well as being flexible, open learning is also very cost effective way for employees to gain industry-recognised qualifications. The OLCI has successfully trained thousands of employees, in many countries in the world. Some of the 200 organisations currently using OLCI as part of their training programmes include the Ford Motor Company, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Jaguar, Sainsbury’s, Texaco and the University of Wales. Individuals can study at work, at home, from remote locations, or whilst travelling. Relocation need cause no disruption, and the OLCI can arrange on-site training if required. OLCI also offers a range of computer and video-based training courses. Options include British academic qualifications, professional and technical subjects, and management and supervisory programmes. And since OLCI offers courses at many levels, all staff can benefit from open learning with the OLCI. |
