The Workers' Educational Association, founded in 1803 is now one of the largest national voluntary organisation in Britain providing over 10,000 courses for more than
100,000 students annually.
Most of the provision offered is face-to-face through its local branches, however the WEA also work with major unions like Unison to offer Workplace Learning
(which presumably is more autonomous).
The WEA are working with Unison, and the Open University to help returning learners develop successful independent ways of learning.
An exciting new project described is the "virtual learning centre" which is being planned as part of the Unison-UfI Health and Social Care Hub, in which WEA is a major partner.
