The Kevala Centre - Page 1 of 2

The foundations

Sandra White studied Yoga, Yoga Therapy and Massage under the late Trevor Anthony. They shared the belief that the correct use of yoga can alleviate or resolve many of life's physical, mental and spiritual problems.

After qualifying in 1987 she continued to work closely with Trevor running practical courses in yoga therapy. On his death his family invited Sandra to run the School, but as she had just moved abroad, she didn't feel it was possible to maintain the continuity and level of commitment expected by the students.

Upon her return to the UK, she established the International Yoga School in 1990, using Trevor Anthony's name in her publicity with the blessing of his family. The first courses were offered late in 1992.

In 1995 Sandra trained in Aromatherapy at the School Of Complementary Therapy in Exeter achieving a credit with the International Therapy Examination Council [ITEC] examinations. Shortly after this the range of courses was expanded to incorporate Aromatherapy, Massage, Nutritional Therapy and Reflexology.

Kevala

By 1997 the school had outgrown its original accommodation, and moved to new premises in Torquay. These were renamed 'Kevala' which is a Sanskrit word meaning whole, beautiful, complete, perfect, and the School became the IYS-Kevala Centre. Whilst the school had, and still has a strong yoga philosophy, the new title reflects the greater range of complementary therapy courses offered.

Sandra ran the school from its inception in 1990 to May 2000. After she was diagnosed with leukaemia it was decided that her husband Peter, who had been with the school full-time for two years, should become a partner for what was inevitably going to be a difficult period. In accordance with her wishes, Peter became principal upon her death in November 2000, and still runs the school according to the same ethos.

Mission Statement

"The IYS-Kevala Centre was founded with the aim of enhancing the professional training of holistic therapists throughout the world. It is our belief that the correct use of holistic therapy can enhance the well being of all, bringing healing to body, mind and soul. Our aim is to provide quality, easily accessible information and training that will enhance understanding and application of holistic therapies."

At the present, there is no regulation of complementary therapies, meaning anybody is able to set up and practice. Despite recent statements from the House of Lords, any control is many years hence. If initial indications are anything to go by, there needs to be a good deal of re-organising and clarification among the plethora of associations that have an interest in complementary therapies.

We strive to provide the best diploma level professional training courses, available to the widest number of students throughout the world, at a realistic level of fees. In this way we hope to minimise the number of people who attempt to practice complementary therapies without any training.
