The International Institute of Reflexology (UK) |
by Hildegard Edwards (Vice President)
Our History
The International Institute of Reflexology was founded in the United States in 1952 by Eunice Ingham, the pioneer of modern reflexology. Demand for tuition in this subject grew over the years and by 1974, training was set up in the UK. Today, the I.I.R. is represented in 16 countries worldwide and reflexology has become a household name.
The link with United States remains, as Eunice Ingham's nephew, Dwight Byers, a world authority on reflexology, keeps an eye on all training activities. The Institute teaches the 'Original Ingham Method' ensuring that the very basis of the therapy is not diluted.
Our Training
Training in the UK originally took placefrom London and in the early 90's spread to regions around the country. Today, with continued growth in the Complementary Health Sector, there are established training centres in London, Bristol, Taunton, Nottingham, Sheffield and Scotland, looked after by our Regional Directors, who are all qualified reflexologists and teachers.
The Institute's motto is 'Dedicated to Professional Standards' and offers one year diploma training courses to Practitioner level, which consist of six two-day modules, linked to a home study programme.
In other words, reflexology is not a subject that can be learned purely on a distance learning basis.
Each module includes anatomy and physiology relevant to a reflexologist, as well as practical sessions in which the various skills and techniques of reflexology are demonstrated and practised under close supervision.
Assessment of each student's progress is continuous and is undertaken in a friendly and helpful way. All teaching is supported by audio visual aids.
Our students come from a variety of backgrounds, many finding themselves in stressful work environments and wishing to change career direction. This study year often opens the door for personal development and a rise in confidence and self-esteem.
Our Qualification
All students who have trained and qualified with the International Institute of Reflexology will go on the register and can use the letters M.I.I.R (Regd), hold a First Aid Certificate and Public Liability Insurance Certificate and will work to our Code of Discipline and Conduct. A few will inevitably move abroad and benefit from their International qualification. Advanced Training
The Institute also provides post-graduate courses for qualified practitioners who are encouraged to refresh, up-date and add to their knowledge and expertise. Qualified Practitioners also benefit from the
Institute's referral services and friendly help line.
Accreditation
In the summer of 1998 the Institute was pleased to receive the Open and Distance Learning Quality Council's accreditation and at the end of November 2000, this award was renewed.
Our Future
Complementary therapies as a whole have grown tremendously in recent years and there is an urgent need for regulation and approved standards. The International Institute is one of a dozen Reflexology organisations who have launched The Reflexology Forum with a view to accomplishing these aims and to take Reflexology forward for the benefit of all.
