Aims of the IGA

The association's objective is to act as a professional association for graphologists. Its aims include:

> The provision of training and examination in graphology
> The undertaking of research into the subject.
> The maintenance of professional standards.
> Provision of a Code of Ethics and Code of Practice for members.
> Support to graphologists.

Why Distance Learning?

Graphology is a complex subject and is difficult (if not impossible) to learn solely from books. Because of its specialised nature it is also unsuitable for teaching in a classroom setting. But it is excellently placed for distance learning not least because most graphologists, once qualified, will work independently and often from a home environment.

One disadvantage of the distance learning method is that many of the samples of handwriting on which students work must, of necessity, be photocopies rather than originals and these do distort to some extent. The problem is overcome by students being required to produce original pieces of writing to illustrate various aspects of personality as well as producing a report based on handwriting of their choice. Typically a student will put in between 700 and 1000 hours of study over two years to qualify. Thus it is intended to make the analyst a professional and is not for the dabbler.

Examinations are set throughout the period of the whole course (which consists of 30 lessons) and are on an 'open book' basis as this is the way in which analysts will work once qualified, the intention is to test understanding rather than memory. In this way also we can monitor the student's progress and help where necessary.

When a student completes an examination s/he receives also a model answer that is intended to take forward the learning cycle and also a paper on a related subject (such as preservation of writing specimens, or marketing services)
