For many years Her Majesty's Inspectorate (HMI) ran a series of Annual Conferences for teaching staff working in the area of Business and Management Education in Further and Higher Education.
With HMI encouragement, two associations were founded in the seventies to cater for the needs of Heads of Business and Management Studies departments in the Further and Higher Education sectors.
These two associations have now evolved in their own particular ways.
For example, the Association of Business Schools (ABS) is now the "lead body" for the Higher Education sector and is particularly concerned with the development of standards for management education and represents all member Business Schools in the "university" sector.
In the Further Education (FE) sector, that body which sought to represent the sector had an inglorious end and did little to foster staff development.
As a consequence, and with the encouragement of HMI, the NABSE was born.
In 1989, with the encouragement and enthusiasm of Greg Smith, now Principal of GLOSCAT and Dr David Collier, now a member of the Inspectorate with the Further Education Funding Council, NABSE was founded to represent the needs of teaching staff in the FE sector, in particular their staff development needs.
The Association received strong encouragement from the then Staff Inspector for Business and Management Studies in Her Majesty's Inspectorate, who is currently the Chief Executive of the Association.
