The School of Theology is firmly based on the academic study of theology and related subjects. The School welcomes students form all religious backgrounds as well as those who do not profess any religious faith. All students must be prepared to adopt a broad scholarly and critical approach. This is a liberal stance and relatively unusual in the private sector in Great Britain.

The Greenwich School of Theology was founded in 1958 as an independent, non-denominational, non-sectarian theological college.
It has its own board of governors, tutors and external examiners and offers distance-learning oportunities to mature students leading to degrees, not only at Bachelor's level but at Master's and Doctoral levels as well.
The School is non-profit making and is pledged to offering opportunities for further education to students who, for valid reasons, may not be able to pursue such courses elsewhere.
Tutors are academically well-qualified to provide tuition, guidance and support to students and efforts are made by the Dean to facilitate direct contact between tutor and student wherever possible.
Day-schools are offered to students as part of their degree courses.
Initially the School attracted most of its mature students from the clergy but in recent years, particularly since the accreditation by ODL QC and the subsequent association with Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education (one of the oldest universities in South Africa), students have come from a much wider base: practising and retired teachers; chaplains and others from the caring services; adults who 'missed out' on formal education; those who find that they have time to follow particular life-long interests; and still, significant numbers of ministers of religion: all from a range of ethnic and religious groups world-wide: an exciting, sometimes challenging mix.
