Basic Proofreading

Before any book, journal or magazine can be published it has to be checked for errors. Proofreading is the process of checking, making sure that previous changes have been carried out and marking up all necessary amendments on to the proof.

What does the course cover?
In Basic Proofreading by Distance Learning, you will learn how to spot errors and how to use the correct symbols to mark them up. You will also gain experience of various types of proofreading, such as proofreading promotional material and 'blind' proofreading.

Course contents:

  • The place of a proofreader in publishing
  • The British Standards Institution proofreading symbols
  • How to deal with non-standard characters and other special cases
  • Types of proof: galley proofs and page proofs
  • Promotional material
  • Proofs from authors' disks
  • Passing the page proofs for press
  • Indexes
  • After page proofs
  • Your next steps - what to do when you complete the course
  • Glossary and book list

In recommending accreditation earlier this year, the ODL QC Chief Executive commented,

"The Publishing Training Centre offers high-quality professional training for the publishing industry, with close links to lead bodies, such as The Publishers Association, and the Society of Freelance Editors and Proofreaders".
