Providers who are adopting or developing more flexible methods of delivery can apply for New Provider Status.    This allows them to work towards the standards set by the Council.

Full accreditation is only available if the provider can show a high quality of service to learners from enrolment through to course completion.

New Provider Status, on the other hand, can be granted before any learners have completed, or even started, a course.

It is available for one year in the first instance. Renewal is possible, but normally only for one more year, and on payment of a further fee.

Applicants must satisfy the Council that the provision so far is compatible with eventual accreditation, and that they are committed to achieving full accreditation in due course.

If a provision is already well-established, Council may recommend that the provider applies for full accreditation from the start.

Council will help New Providers to develop their open and distance learning provision, and offers a range of services, including advice and guidance on good practice.

Providers granted New Provider Status can state this in their promotional literature, but cannot use the ODL QC quality mark; this is reserved for those providers who have achieved full accreditation.

How to Apply
To apply, you should send us:
  • a completed application form
    (Click on the link to choose a format);
  • a short statement (see below);
  • copies of any published printed matter such as leaflets, prospectuses etc (but not course materials, at this stage);
  • the names and addresses of referees where possible;
  • and the appropriate cheque.

The statement should outline:

  • who you are;
  • what links you have to other bodies;
  • what courses you are developing;
  • who are the intended learners/customers;
  • what stage the development has reached;
  • your plans for the next 6 to 12 months.

You are encouraged to provide the names of up to three referees.    They should be able to comment in a professional capacity on the quality or probity of your planned provision.

Referees are not essential, but failure to provide them may slow down the consideration of your application.

The application fee is £100, payable on application.    This will be deducted in full from the assessment fee if you apply for full assessment within six months of application, but is otherwise non-refundable.    The fee for renewal for a further year is £50.
